Attitudes are the forerunners of conditions. -Eric Butterworth

When we take an inventory of our life, what do we see? Our relationship with family and friends, our work, our experiences, the house we live in, the things we surround ourselves with, the places we go to, our sense of joy and fulfillment in our life- these are all external manifestation of our inner world. It is a reflection of our thoughts, beliefs and our attitudes.
All we need to do is to take a close look at what we see in our life. We then realize that all of that is of our own creation.
Let us then ask ourselves these questions: what do I want to keep? what do I want to change? what do I need to change in my attitude in order to change the state of my life?
We can then look at our thoughts and beliefs that have hampered us from our true purpose. Then we begin anew, knowing that any condition we are in is an expression of our mental beliefs and our attitudes.

Keep a Green Tree in your heart and perhaps a singing bird will come. -Chinese Proverb
A tree is nourished by the sun, by nutrients in the soil and the air and the refreshing rain, among other ideal conditions for its growth. So is our being nourished in different ways. We are nourished by external factors such as movement, fresh air, nutrituous food and so on. There are also internal factors that give us nourishment such as healthy thoughts and beliefs, receiving and expressing love and a life of purpose and contribution. To me, 'the green tree in your heart' refers to keeping your heart and mind and body open and nourished.
Yet, when the tree has poor access to the nourishing conditions, it becomes ill and eventually dies off. This pattern shows up in humans too. How to create then, internal nourishing factors for our green heart? One way is to know that it is we who need to change and not so much the rest of the world. We need to do the "work" to clean up and clear up the toxic thoughts and beliefs that lie within us. Cleaning up does not mean here that we judge ourselves and make ourselves "wrong". However, it does mean that we need to take active steps to resolve and release the guck and the muck that is sticking to our consciousness. Think about what filth keeps your window opaque? Which dirt blocks you from a crystal clear vision? Take a mop and wipe it. Take a vacuum cleaner and suck it. Clean it up. Clean it up. If this sounds too difficult a task, then break it down. For example, first begin with a little corner of your external life such as your home which has been gathering dust or is sitting cluttered. Next, bring this idea to your inner world. Well, this is exactly what I am currently taking up.
One of the results of this process might be that one can become more open by cleaning up the residue in their consciousness. This is then the 'singing bird' in the proverb: the result or the positive change that comes from keeping a 'green heart'. Once we embark on the ongoing process of nurturing our 'green heart', then the appearance of a songbird become real. In other words, the experience of joy, love, freedom and peace become real.
The 'perhaps' in this proverb throws me off as it calls us to be detached. It seems to mean that we can clean up the toxic elements in our being and maybe we find the peace and joy. There seems to be a fine line here: between expectation and detachment. This is a dilemma that I am currently pouring my mind over: How do I lead a life of expectation of only the best, of peace on Earth, of joy for all and simultaneously detach myself from the results? Detachment would mean that I do not care about the results and the outcome, right? What frame of mind or what state of consciousness do I need to be in in order to navigate this with ease?
For now I cleanse the muck and then as a second step engage with the challenge of detachment!
I welcome your insight if you like to share it with me.
With love,
-Sophia Ojha

A few moments of mindfulness make a world of difference. -Sue Patton Thoele
Thoele is referring to mindfulness in everyday life that brings us new perspectives on almost everything. Here, mindfulness can mean sitting in meditation with eyes closed, focusing on the movement of our breath, focusing on a mantra or simply witnessing what is. Yet, it can also mean bringing our attention to each moment in a new, refreshing and active way regardless of where we are and what we are doing or how we are being.
The ways to be mindful are plentiful. They are simultaneously simple while they are deep. We can bring mindfulness to practically everything we think, feel, believe and do. Let us take some activities from a morning routine for instance. After we wake up and walk out of the bed, we can be mindful with every step we take. We can bring attention to each moment as we pick up a cup or sip the first cup of morning tea or coffee. We can be mindful of each action we take while cutting fruits or preparing breakfast. Or we can become mindful of the moment when we look outside the window to welcome the new day. It can be in the way we land our first glance on the people and pets we love. It is the attention we give to receiving love from another being. It is the attention we give to experiencing the gentle sounds of birds outside our window. And so on...
Mindfully bringing attention to our thoughts and our words can be powerful and can mean a world of difference for ourselves and those we interact with. One of its functions is to bring our awareness away from our ego-mind and towards our spirit. Connecting to our spirit gives us a glimpse of the peace and unlimited potentiality that lies within each of us. In just a matter of seconds we feel a fresh energy that empowers and strengthens us. Just noticing the flow of our breath for a minute or two connects us with our spirit. It need not be hours of meditative practice; just a moment or two. Now you know some of the ways how to be mindful in any moment.
This practice of mindfulness can lead to tremendous change within ourselves. It is solid preparation for times when we are faced with huge challenges. Think of it this way, let us say I fall into deep water. Now would not be the best time to learn how to swim; although I could try. It may be difficult to recall all the under water olympics videos I have seen of how athletes swim and then trying to mimic them. It would help to have practiced swimming already before I fall in the water. Or in other words: let us say I need to take a written test or exam. When I enter the hall to take the test, it would be ideal that I come prepared rather than open my notes and start studying now. Similarly, practicing mindfulness for a moment here and moment there and gradually several moments throughout the day, helps to meet life with a sense of preparation. This gives us the strength, the faith and the courage to meet any moment with love and appreciation. It is then when we can meet the moment and say, "Hello, Moment. Thank you for being here. What are you here to teach me? What can I learn about myself from you? What do I need to master?" It is then we converse with life in a new language along with a renewed sense of reverence.
This is an invitation: Practice mindfulness a few moments a day. I have and it has changed my life.
Love and more love,
-Sophia Ojha
